For fans of: Jager bombs, Turbo-charged beers, Strawpedos, Brandy and Coke
Associated with: Wild behaviour, death on the palate, rampant energy, big nights out, fighting
Tasting notes stolen from the internet: “a feisty, gravy-coloured tincture with strident tones of prune and swimming pool on the nose; a palate blending Dubonnet, cherry cola, Ribena, Benylin, aniseed, communion wine and Hubba Bubba strawberry bubble gum; plus a kick like a chorus line; improved with ice.”
What’s the buzz? Buckfast Tonic Wine is a popular drink in the UK, particularly in Ireland and Scotland where it has a strong following but is often associated with anti-social behaviour. As such it has earned the tagline: “Buckfast: gets you fucked fast”. The story of Buckfast Tonic Wine begins in the late 19th century when French Catholic monks, seeking respite from persecution, bought Buckfast Abbey in Devon, UK. London based wine merchant J Chandler & Co Ltd bought the Abbey decades later and established the recipe, which has been related to street crime and violence by politicians in the UK, especially in Glasgow. Several media outlets have reported for example, that between 2010 and 2012, Strathclyde Police said Buckfast was mentioned in almost 6,500 crime reports.
Is the bad rep deserved? Blaming social behaviour on a drink is seemingly illogical. Moral outrage tends to mask stronger social causes. The fact that it is associated with “Neds,” or “non-educated delinquents,” masks the discrimination of blaming across social class. Buckfast’s ingredients include flavourings, sugar, preservatives and caffeine, the latter of which might be quite close to an espresso or Red Bull (estimates vary but there is a noticeable amount – reportedly 37mg of caffeine per 100ml). The booze content is not particularly high – 15%.
The main issue is probably over consumption combined with strong hits of caffeine, and similar drinks such as Four Loko in the US have had equal amounts of criticism. The Drunken Master might suggest that the sugar, caffeine and relatively low amount of booze (amps you up, doesn’t make you pass out) is the perfect combination for long high octane nights out – and that usually ends in disaster.
So has the Drunken Master tried it? Certainly not for a while, since being forced to down a bottle in a house party way back when. It definitely has the boost of energy that you might look for on a night out. But the taste does leave something to be desired, along with the cloying syrupy texture.
[Buckfast Tonic Wine]?
