Hong Kong is an oppressive city for creative people, and The Way We Keep Dancing [#狂舞派3] offers a brave focus on the struggle many face to survive. The sequel to The Way We Dance [狂舞派], an easy-going popular movie from 2013, the current incarnation focuses more on the effects of “real-estate hegemony”(地產霸權) that touches every person in Hong Kong. Most people can’t afford to buy a home, opening a brick and mortar business is risky to suicidal; while chain groups maintain a stranglehold on the city’s street life. For young artists, is there a future to look forward to?
Adam Wong Sau-ping’s movie looks at Hana (Cherry Ngan Cheuk-ling); Ah Leung (Babyjohn Choi Hon-yick); Dave (Lokman Yeung), Milk Tea (Lydia Lau King-man), and rapper Heyo Fok Ka-ho (playing himself); as they work on a “Dance Street” project that both promotes their art but unwittingly supports wider gentrification of “Kowloon Industrial District” (real-life Kwun Tong).
The cast is eagerly supplemented by real-life artists including local hip-hop star Novel Fla$h who lend a sense of authenticity to proceedings. Wong has moved away from the fun and easy going nature of the first movie The Way We Dance [狂舞派] and that has irked some, but 2013 is not 2021 – Hong Kong has witnessed two major protest movements, massive inflation, widening of inequality, and the disintegration of many social norms. This is not the time for a glib movie – Hong Kong cinema needs to prove its ability to stay relevant in Asia, particularly with the continuing success of Taiwan, Japan, and Korea both in TV and film.
It’s reminiscent of Wong’s She Remembers, He Forgets (2015) [哪一天我們會飛] that highlighted Hong Kongers fears around the handover. With the city now facing a heightened environment of censorship, The Way We Keep Dancing is an important statement that Hong Kong cinema can maintain its relevance through social commentary, even if artists may be dying a slow death in the city.
